AWESOME ADVENTURES FIJI

This is our review of:
AWESOME ADVENTURES FIJI

We toured the islands of Fiji with a tour company called Awesome Adventures. Our package was the “Lazy Threesome” and we had an amazing time…check it out:

One Night in Nadi

If you book a tour with Awesome Adventures, you’ll most likely need to book at least one night in Nadi, since the ferry to the islands leave out of Port Denerau in Nadi. We booked one night at the Blue Water Lodge, which was located about 10-15 minutes in a shuttle from Airport. And by shuttle, I mean a station wagon driven by one of the hostel workers.

While in Nadi, you can visit a local market, walk on the beach, learn how to cook with a “Lovo” (a traditional Fijian cooking method shown in this photo), or just chill at your hotel and enjoy the sun.

Ferry To The Islands

AWESOME ADVENTURES FIJI - Ferry Route Map
Awesome Adventures will pick you up in a bus from your hotel or hostel (along with about 40 other backpackers) and take you directly to Port Denarau to catch the high-speed ferry to your first island resort on your itinerary.

Our first resort was the Nabua Lodge on Nacula Island. Since Nabua lodge is the last stop on the ferry, we enjoyed a gorgeous (and ridiculously sunburned) 4.5 hour scenic trip from Port Denaru, which picked up and dropped off other island-hoppers at about 11 other islands on the way.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of the ferry ride is how they get you from the large, high-speed ferry onto the tiny beaches where your resorts are located.

At each island “stop”, the ferry does not actually stop but slow way down so that much smaller motorboats driven by the local resort employees could tie onto the ferry and load up the guests, their luggage, and some munitions to restock the resort (food, beer, etc.). Once on these smaller motorboats, the ferry takes off again and you can enjoy a slower ride to your resort (where you’ll have to walk through shallow water to reach the beach, and you may be greeted by a musical welcome as pictured below).

Now envision being in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and then a 4.5 hour high-speed ferry ride and a 30 minute motor boat ride away from the mainland…talk about remote!

Nabua Lodge on Nacula Island

When we booked our “Lazy Threesome” tour, we opted for the “1 Coconut” package (1 Coconut being the cheapest and 3 Coconuts being the most expensive), giving up some conveniences like 24/7 electricity and hot water. We didn’t know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised with Nabua Lodge and were even given our own Bure (hut).

On Nabua Lodge you’ll have several options to help you pass the lazy day away…you can go for a swim, fish with a hand line, hike across the island, visit the local village and meet the Chief, buy some local goods from the villagers and see a way of life that is frozen in time, or just make that hard decision on which hammock you should lay in. Life is good at Nabua Lodge!

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner  at Nabua Lodge were all at specific times during the day (8am, 11:45am and 7:30pm). All meals were very plentiful, and delicious.  During our stay for Breakfast we were offered cornflakes, toast, pancakes/biscuits and fruit (mango and bananas). For lunch we had pizza one day and pasta salad the next. Dinner, however, was the largest and best meal of the day. On our first night we had fish, spinach cake and taro. Our second night was a bbq buffet including potatoes, eggplant, spinach, chicken, sausage, salad, and fruit.  Throughout the day there was always a kava bowl filled with fresh mangoes for the taking.

Fijians love music and dancing, and you’ll be treated to both at Nabua Lodge (and asked to participate if you’re up for it)!

White Sandy Beach on Naviti Island

AWESOME ADVENTURES FIJI

The highlights here were the dinner on “Fijian Night” (which included food cooked in a traditional “lovo”), daytime volleyball and the evening fun, entertainment and games.

Be sure to request the dorm that’s the closest building on the property to the water. As you can see below, our deck was literally over the ocean when the tide rolled in. We always kept the doors open when sleeping and the breeze along with the sounds of the waves lapping the shore was amazing. We also enjoyed an incredible sky on our last night with millions of visible stars.

South Sea Island

AWESOME ADVENTURES FIJI

Awesome Adventures Fiji - South Sea Island

This island is very close to the mainland and Port Denerau, and is so tiny that you could walk across the island in about 3 minutes.

We spent our time here snorkeling (just be careful for tiny jellyfish that give little stings but are mostly harmless), playing games (no entertainment on this island so you’ll have to make your own), and just relaxing and enjoying being on one of the smallest resort islands in the world!

We stayed in a 24 bedroom dorm on this island which was by far the largest dorm room we stayed in while in Fiji, but honestly you are hardly in the room so it doesn’t matter.

The islands of Fiji are truly beautiful. Some are lush with green foliage and tall mountains, while others are tiny and just as you would imagine are nothing more than clear blue water, white sand, and some palm trees and a lodge in the middle.

We highly recommend Awesome Adventures Fiji and the “Lazy Threesome” package.

AWESOME ADVENTURES FIJI

Our package included a 5 night/6 day stay at the 3 separate resorts (each on a different island), and included all accommodation, meals and ferry transportation for $600pp USD. Note that some of the resorts include bottled water and some do not (so you’ll have to buy it) and bring plenty of sunscreen and some bug spray. Looking for some mainland fun?
