HELPX WORK EXCHANGE - What Is A Work Exchange

What is a Work Exchange?

1. An arrangement where travelers “work” in “exchange” for room and board.
2. An amazing way to meet locals, experience the culture, and learn the best “insider secrets.”

Our first work exchange experience was amazing. We use the website HelpX.net and it works like a charm. For a small membership fee, you can search hosts in various regions of the world and read reviews of hosts and past helpers. These reviews also help add a layer of security for wary travelers.

Here are some details and photos from our first HelpX work exchange experience with The Alexander Family:

The Home

Sharon, the mother, picked us from the train station with the boys, Tommy and William, in the backseat. When we arrived at their beautiful home, she showed us to our room, a beautiful apartment-type area with our own queen sized bed and bathroom.

The Family

Over our 2 week stay, we got very close with Sharon and Christian, Tommy and William, Reggie and Pepples, and Tweet!

The Work

During our stay, we had several different tasks/projects. I did quite a bit of tidying up and cleaning around the house as well as helping outside, doing weeding and mowing the lawn on a ride-on! LOVED the ride-on by the way!

Mike did a lot of outdoor tasks including weeding, hedging, edging, digging a ditch, cleaning the shed – most of these tasks are things Mike has never done before. He made me proud!

The Fun

There was NO shortage of fun during our stay with The Alexanders. From playing games with the boys like ‘Monkey in the Middle’ and ‘Monsters,’ to attending their BMX race, to hiking, swimming, eating, reading and just relaxing…we had a blast!

The Firsts

As you get older, doesn’t it seem that you have less and less “firsts?” Well, that is NOT the case when you experience a HelpX work exchange (also read my other post about firsts: “I’m Not A Virgin Anymore – Experiencing New Things” if you want some more inspiration). As long as you are easy-going and open minded, you are sure to experience some amazing firsts.. These were some of mine:

Held a chick (or “chook” as they call them in Australia)
Made homemade gingerbread and icing

Attended a BMX race
Jumped off a 25 foot cliff
Mowed a lawn on a ride-on
Ate a Tim Tam – okay several Tim Tams
Had a cup of tea (I like tea!)
Saw a redback spider, one of the most poisonous and deadly spiders in Australia
Played ‘Monsters’
Attended a disco party in the living room
Ate the freshest eggs you could ever have (straight from the chicken)
Used a vegetable steamer
Drove on the right side of the car (this one is for Mike, I haven’t driven yet)
Had a bird fly around the house freely and land wherever he pleases – LOVE YOU TWEET!
Cuddled an Alpaca

Some Additional Benefits

We also got lucky enough to experience a few other benefits from this Work Exchange. Christian helped us find, inspect and ultimately buy our truck, Mike also got a free haircut compliments of Sharon, and I also got some free medical treatment from Christian’s mom after I hurt my ear drum after that cliff jump! We didn’t expect any of this but truly appreciated all of it.
