Oh, the Places you’ll Go!

INSPIRATION FROM DR. SEUSS

Earlier today Alisa and I arrived in Macmaster’s Beach, about 90 minutes north of Sydney. This is our 3rd work exchange family that we’re staying with. The drive down from Newcastle was typical freeway driving for the first hour or so, but then we turned onto a smaller road for the last half hour and things got more exciting. As the drive to Macmasters beach (and our new short-term home) continued, we passed through quaint, waterfront towns and we knew that this would be a pretty cool place.

Then we arrived at the house: a beautiful home built at the bottom of a long, windy driveway set upon 7 acres of beautiful bushland. I’ve had almost no time to explore the property and the surrounding bush and oceanfront, however, arriving here made me take a step back and realize how cool this experience really is.

Back in my “old life,” a typical Friday would be spent behind a desk or in meetings…waiting for a much needed weekend to begin. Cut to December 2012…I am spending a Friday afternoon road tripping with my beautiful wife down the Australian coast and experiencing incredible things, places and people.

Our HelpX Work Exchange with the Alexander Family was filled with lots of story time with their young boys. Several of those stories were Dr. Seuss books (which are always fun to read out loud). One title in particular is very appropriate for sharing some inspiration from Dr. Seuss. It’s called “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”

Here’s an excerpt (full text here):

You can get so confused
that you’ll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place…

…for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!
That’s not for you!

Somehow you’ll escape
all that waiting and staying.
You’ll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

So many people spend their lives in “The Waiting Place”waiting for a promotion, waiting for next year, waiting to turn 65 and retire, or waiting for whatever it is they tell themselves to keep them in The Waiting Place just a little bit longer. A little bit longer, for me, was 10 years.

I know that now, however, Alisa and I are not in The Waiting Place. We are out there experiencing life and this awesome world that we live in. I hope that you are not in The Waiting Place, but if you are, remember (and act on) the words of the wise Dr. Seuss:

So…
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!

And here are some photos from our last week in Newcastle with The Barnard Family. We are definitely experiencing things we never have before.
