TASMANIA DESTINATION GUIDE

Famous for Tasmanian Devils, Cradle Mountain, MONA, crazy weather and being far from everything, Tasmania is a MUST SEE destination for your bucket list. Here’s 8 awesome reasons why:

1. Cradle Mountain National Park

So many hiking options and so much beauty. We went twice and conquered both a 3 hour hike to Marion’s Lookout as well as an 8 hour hike to the summit. The top of the summit hike is a bouldering adventure, not for the faint of heart but well worth the effort. Enjoy jaw-dropping views and the cleanest air in the world (literally).

2. Reliquaire

So creepy yet so intriguing! One of the most unique stores you’ll ever see, with items ranging from landscaping sculptures to board games to creepy, creepy, creeeeeepy dolls. Check out the Reliquaire site.

3. See a Platypus

Head to the Tasmanian Arboretum near Lower Barrington. If you’re lucky like we were, you’ll see the elusive platypus swimming in the pond! Bring a picnic and enjoy a gorgeous sunset.

4. Bruny Island

Bruny Island is a tiny island off of a small island (Tasmania) that is far from a huge island (Australia) that is far from everything! (read that again if you have to)…

Take a 4×4 and enjoy the 2 mile beach drive to one of our absolute favorite campsites…Cloudy Bay (or click here for the official Parks Website). From here you can relax, hike, and enjoy fresh oysters and mussels right from the sea. You can also drive to the Penguin viewing area (located on the strip of land connecting North and South Bruny Island) and see waddles (yes, waddles) of Fairy Penguins make their way to their homes after the sun sets! Be sure to dress warm as the temperature really drops when the sun disappears.

5. Freycinet National Park

First, take the short hike to Wineglass Bay…that’s the warm up. If it’s nice out and you’re feeling adventurous, take on the amazing hike/bouldering adventure to the top of Mt. Amos.

6. Hobart

The island’s commerce hub and largest city. Head there on a Saturday to meander through Salamanca Market. Remember that no visit to Hobart is complete without a trip to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory and the Museum of Old and New Art (see #7).

7. MONA – The Museum of Old and New Art

The museum for people who don’t like museums, and of course for those that do. It’s privately funded, meaning that the exhibits can be as bizarre and politically incorrect as you can imagine (but only if you have a really twisted imagination)!

This place will have you asking…”What is art? Are WE art? Is ART art?”

8. The Drive From Hobart to Strahan

It’s full or curves and gorgeous scenery. Enjoy it, don’t rush, and plan a stop at Nelson Falls.

BONUS TIP #1. Jean and Graham Gailer

You may think it’s odd to include people on this list, but we would think it’s downright wrong to visit Tassie and not pay a visit to Jean and Graham at their beautiful home in Lower Barrington! As one of our most gracious HelpX Work Exchange hosts, we spent lots of time with this wonderful couple…we enjoyed farming, eating Jean’s delicious meals , drinking Graham’s homemade beer and liquor, playing Wii bowling, and cuddling with their amazing dogs. A few hours work for them won’t be enough for all you’ll get in return. Find them on Helpx.net or reach out and we’ll connect you.

BONUS TIP #2. Visit in February

We understand that this may not be possible, but remember that Tassie is relatively close to Antarctica. February brings the sun, mild weather, and will allow you to enjoy nature and all of the splendor that is Tasmania!
