Melbourne Destination Guide:
What to do in our favorite city in Australia!
This city is adored by people who don’t even like cities! With it’s many laneways hiding amazing bars and restaurants, beautiful waterfront scenery, markets, and great public transportation, Melbourne (pronounced “Mel-bun, not “Mel-born” or even “Mel-burn”) is a must-visit on any trip to Australia.

1. See the Iconic Bungalows at Brighton Beach
This beautiful beach, with those iconic bungalows, is just a short drive or train from the city.

2. Cruise the Laneways
We may call them alleys or alleyways, but in Melbourne they aren’t places for garbage bins, hookers and drug deals. Laneways are thoroughfares of commuters and tourists looking to experience Melbourne’s cafe culture and some of the best shops, food and drink that the city has to offer.

3. Check out Queen Victoria Market
A one stop shop for all things Aussie…from fresh produce and wine to a souvenir for everyone on your list. Located within the city and open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and weekends…plan a few hours to stroll the multitude of aisles.

4. Eat Dumplings in Chinatown
Amazing food and BYO…what more do you need for an awesome way to start your evening. Pick up some wine or a 6-pack and head to any of the numerous chinese food restaurants and order lots of dumplings to share.

5. Find a Hidden Bar
So many nightspots in Melbourne are tucked in laneways, with minimal signage, and sometimes even constructed of nothing more than shipping containers. Find one that looks fun and head inside for a night partying with locals and travelers alike.

6. Watch an Aussie Rules Football Game
If it’s the right season, catch a game at Etihad Stadium just outside of the city. This city also offers Rugby, Cricket, big-name concerts and theater. Check out That’s Melbourne to plan your trip around these big events.

Bonus Tip #1. Experience the Moomba Festival
Alisa and I were lucky enough to be in Melbourne during the Moomba Festival (which takes place in early March every year). This free fest features world-class waterskiing and wakeboarding, fireworks, and the famous “Birdman Rally” (where brave souls build their own flying contraptions in an attempt soar over the Yarra River). You’ll also find the usual festival goods: rides, games, street performers, and great food. Check below for a video of the festival that we put together:
