…by writing one letter every year!

So who are you writing this letter to? You are writing it to your toughest critic as well as the one person who has the most control over your future. Have you guessed it yet?

You are writing a letter to YOU…at the same time every year.

All too often we set goals…whether it’s to lose some weight, find a job that makes you happy, travel more, and so on and so on…but that thing called “Life” gets in the way and screws up those grand plans.

ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS BY WRITING ONE LETTER EVERY YEAR

Goals are so important to achieve what you want in life, and more importantly, they make you take the time to

FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT IN YOUR LIFE!

Oftentimes, even when we do set goals, we don’t take the time to follow up on those goals, we make lofty goals without breaking them down into feasible milestones, or we just forget that we made them in the first place! Therefore, we keep leading the same life that we are trying to change!

A few years ago, I started writing an annual “Letter To Me.” Perhaps I was inspired by Brad Paisley’s song with the same name, however, unlike the song where he writes a letter to his past self (which after some thought I realized that this would be impossible), I decided to write one to my future self!

I attempt to keep the letter short and to the point, and I:

Sum up the highs and lows of the past year

Get nostalgic and list memorable events and trips

Take note of the previous year’s goals and how I succeeded or failed (and why)

Write new goals for the upcoming year (attempting to break them down into smaller milestones when possible)

I always try to read this letter and write a new one on my birthday each year (although it can realistically be weeks or months later before I actually write the new one). This letter ends up being a birthday gift to myself…something I not only look forward to each year but prepare for by making sure that I am working my hardest on those goals that I set for myself. It’s always okay to re-read that letter as much as you want during the year to make sure you are on track.

So whether you write your first letter to yourself today or wait until your birthday…I hope you just do it. Then at that same time next year, you will be reading the letter that your past self wrote to you and hopefully see how much you (and your life) has kicked ass. And then, of course, take some new steps to make it kick even more ass this year!
