WHAT INSPIRES US:
“LITTLE BOXES” BY MALVINA REYNOLDS

Alisa and I first heard this song while watching the TV show “Weeds” (this is the intro song). Immediately, I said that this song was perfect for us and the way we live our lives.

Do you believe that life is so frequently based around following what the guy/girl in front of you is doing, what your parent’s think you should be doing, or the fact that the end point is fantasized about more than the adventure of actually getting there?

The imagery that goes along with lyrics in the theme song is also fantastic. Check it out (the entire version of the song can be listened to by clicking play under the video):

Full lyrics to Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds:

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same,
There’s a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.
And the people in the houses
All went to the university
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same
And there’s doctors and lawyers
And business executives
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school,
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business
And marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same,
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

Now, as one-half of The Carpe Diem Couple, Mike is using his experiences and lessons learned to help others do the same and quit their corporate jobs, follow their dreams, and the live the lives they want.
